FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
WHAT IS PSYCHODYNAMIC PSYCHOTHERAPY?
Psychodynamic psychotherapy can help you understand how your mind and sense of self develops and processes experiences. It can help you understand feelings, relationships and behaviour by uncovering hidden aspects of the mind which may be affecting you and your relationships which could otherwise be confusing, within the safety of a trusting professional relationship. Sometimes it is difficult to understand why we do the things we do or repeat situations that are harmful to us. Traumatic, painful or confusing experiences from the past may be shaping your feelings and behaviour and how you relate in the present. We can explore your childhood, memories, fantasies and dreams to help make sense of how aspects of your past may be affecting you. By bringing these aspects into conscious awareness, it can help you understand deep-seated beliefs and behaviours and slowly start to change how you relate to yourself and others. This includes your relationship with me as your therapist, as one of the key aspects of psychodynamic psychotherapy is the understanding that a client’s relationship with the therapist is one of the key therapeutic agents of change. The psychodynamic approach also considers the social and cultural pressures put on you by society, which can exert a powerful but sometimes hidden influence on your life. Over time, psychodynamic psychotherapy can help you build the emotional resilience to deal with life’s challenges and to find ways of living more authentically as yourself.
WHAT CAN I EXPECT?
Each session lasts 50 minutes, known traditionally as the 'psychoanalytic hour.' Sessions will be at the same time each week, to give you the chance to embed therapy into your life and make it part of your weekly routine. It can be helpful to plan your breaks to coincide with the standard breaks of 2 weeks in winter and spring and 3-4 weeks in the summer to get the most out of our work together.
HOW MUCH DO SESSIONS COST?
I offer sessions on a sliding scale starting at £70, depending on income, which we can discuss in your first session.  I also offer a number of low-cost spaces for those on a low income, although these spaces are currently filled as of February 2025. Please note, I do charge for cancellations, but will endeavour to find an alternative time if you are unable to make a session.
SUPERVISION & CPD
I have regular supervision with a qualified psychoanalytic supervisor as a professional requirement of UKCP, BPC & FPC. I attend regular Continuing Professional Development (CPD) to stay up-to-date with contemporary theory and developments about psychotherapy and issues surrounding neurodiversity.
PROFESSIONAL ACCREDITATION & INSURANCE
I am a member of UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP), British Psychoanalytic Council (BPC) and Foundation for Psychotherapy & Counselling (FPC) and abide by their codes of ethics. I am also a member of the Pschotherapy & Counselling Union (PCU). I hold full professional public liability insurance and an enhanced DBS certificate.
